Blackout Day: Kyrgyz media temporarily stops publishing news

Today, on 28 October 2022, a full-scale campaign against unprecedented attacks on freedom of speech is kicking off.

On 28 October 2022, Blackout Day is announced. It means a one-off halt of broadcasting and placing all news materials from 9:00 to 12:00 am.
In addition, all editorial offices involved in the campaign refuse to place any press releases of governmental agencies throughout the day.

The Ministry of Culture of the Kyrgyz Republic has made an illegitimate decision to block the website of Azattyk Media (the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Service in the Kyrgyz Republic). In response, the Kyrgyz media community calls the authorities to put a stop to the massive and unprecedented pressure on the freedom of expression and freedom of speech and close all criminal cases opened against journalists, bloggers, civil activists and other individuals who merely expressed their opinions.

Economist.kg thanks our readers for understanding. We urge you to stand together in this challenging time for the country.
